Henderson & Bisset

Henderson & Bisset

Henderson & Bisset were a leading bookbinding firm. They were established in 1823 at 25 St James Square, Edinburgh.  After several moves, by 1831 they were located in George Street in Edinburgh.  Henderson & Bisset had removed to George Street to be in the centre of the New Town so that their place of business would be convenient to bothe sides of their trade, on the one hand the publishers and booksellers situated in Princes Street and George Street, and on the other for their private clients for more elaborate bindings.

Henderson specialised in the finishing side of the trade, while Bisset was a forwarder or binder. The firm evidently produced high quality work.  This is evidenced by the fact that it was granted a Royal Warrant in 1838, which was regranted in 1889 and was the only warrant granted to a Scottish bookbinder at this time.   In 1893 the firm moved to North Hanover Street, Edinburgh.
