The firm of Neill & Company began operation in 1739 when Patrick Neill was apprenticed to a James Cochrane printer in Burnet's Close, Edinburgh.
Neill joined in partnership with two booksellers, Hamilton & Balfour, creating the printing firm Hamilton, Balfour & Neill. Hamilton left the firm in 1762 and it became Balfour & Neill. When Balfour retired in 1765 the company became Neill & Company.
Over the next two hundred years the company remained in the control of two families; the Neills and the Frasers.
The company based latterly at 212 Causewayside, Edinburgh continued operating until its closure in 1973.
