What Edinburgh Produced

Edinburgh was a major publishing centre with large publishing houses located all around the city.  Firms like Thomas Nelsons were famed for their book publishing and the name Bartholomews was synonymous with quality mapmaking.  Edinburgh was also known for its stationers and large bookbinding works such as Henderson & Bisset and Hunter & Foulis.

Print production in Edinburgh consisted not only of book production; but also newspapers, journals, diaries, calendars, greeting cards, wrapping papers, stationery, ledgers, publicity flyers etc.

The pictures above represent a selection of items held within City of Edinburgh Museums.  The flickr gallery features selected items which demonstrate the type of artwork that Edinburgh printers produced.  Click on the link feature on the gallery to view selected catalogue records of the holdings of City of Edinburgh Museums.
