The monophoto is a photo-composing machine and it is the counterpart of the monotype composition caster. Instead of casting columns of single type from molten metal, it produced exposed photographic film or paper ready for development. The photographic development of the film is carried out in the darkroom; it is here for the first time that the work can be checked to see if it is running correctly on a photographic proof.  The work to be produced is made up on an illuminated glass screen, transfer strip material providing a tacky surface on to which the film is positioned.  The page is soon in a form presentable to the process for either offset plates or etched plates.
